Not far from Kharkov, near the village Kommunar is located sports airfield. The airfield is designed to accommodate flights of general aviation, testing avia-models, and for parachute jumps. But there is also an interesting mini-museum of aviation.
Aviation museum is located open air it is small, but it attracted by its history. On the museum area exhibited a number of legendary Soviet aircrafts such as the MiG-21 and MiG-23 fighter-bombers, MiG-27 and Su-17, and several helicopters. All equipment belongs Kharkiv Air Force University. An interesting fact is that among the exhibits are exhibited some bombers and helicopter gunships that have been the war in Afghanistan.
Aviation air museum was created aviators and enthusiasts from Kharkov flying club named by Valentina Grizodubova who was one of the first female pilots in the Soviet Union and was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union and Hero of Socialist Labour. Anyone can visit museum for free. Nowadays it have a rough times a couple of years ago the museum was on the verge of closing. There were rumors that exposed aviation would go for scrap. But, thanks to the efforts of head flying club Sergei Filatov, the museum was saved survived.
Visiting the museum can be combined with other pleasant initiatives. Kharkov flying club conducts and training skydiving and flying airplanes and helicopters. In addition, this is annual competition airfield with parachuting, model aircraft and helicopter sport at various levels.
You can get there from Kharkiv Metro station "Holodna Hora" (Cold Mountain) by bus Kharkiv - Lyubotin and to the airport in Korotych (stop "Kommunar") Aerodrome is the right of the road.
