The Opera House in Lviv is known in all over Europe. It is difficult to find more beautiful building anywhere. Its image adorns all banknotes with a face value of twenty hryvnias. The current name is Lviv National Academic Theater named after S. Krushelnytska.
The need to build a separate building for the city theater appeared in the late nineteenth century. The competition for the best construction project was attended by the most outstanding masters of their craft. The winner was Sigmund Gorgolevsky, director of the Higher School of Arts and Crafts and a well-known architect throughout Europe. The jury's requirement is to build a theater in the city center. But here flowed the river Poltva! It seemed that the project would not be realized. What was invented to get out of this situation? The river was blocked and taken into the collector, and a solid concrete foundation was laid under the foundation of the future theater. This decision has been innovative: never and nowhere in Europe has there been anything like that.
The ceremonial laying of the first stone in the foundation of this unique monument of Ukraine took place in 1897. After 3 years later the Opera House was completely finished. The project was financed not only by the city treasury, but also by ordinary citizens of Lviv and its outskirts. The total cost of materials and works amounted almost two and a half million Austrian crowns. Prominent masters of the city and all over Europe worked on the construction and decoration of the temple of arts.
The central cornice is crowned by the sculptural composition «Joy and Suffering of Life». Beneath it - statues of eight muses, patrons of various arts. On the pediment are established bronze sculptures of the genius of comedy, tragedy and drama and glory, holding a golden palm branch. Not inferior to the facade in a lush, rich design and interior. Several kilograms of gold, tons of multicolored marble, exquisite paintings, stucco, sculptures, paintings by outstanding masters were used for decoration.
