Vysokyi zamok (“High castle”) is the highest place of Lviv and one of the “must visit” points for many travellers.
Nowadays Vysokyi zamok is a park with observation deck on its peak. From this point you can have a great view on the whole city and even the forests. It is favorite place both for travellers and for locals. Park has quite wide alleys and benches for the rest. It is cosily and quietly enough here, although park is located in the city center.
However only fragment of the southern wall remained from the castle. This wall was located between main outer and inner gateways of the castle. It is considered that Vysokyi zamok as a building was created in 12-13 century. At different time the castle belonged to the Tatar-Mongols, Poles, Lithuanians, Swedes and Austrians. Ukrainians have already gotten the hill without castle. Most of it was disassembled by the Austrians at the beginning of the 19 century for construction. In particular, the stone building on the Lychakivska Street 3 was built from these bricks.
The upper part of the Vysokyi zamok, where is observation deck located, was created artificially in 1896-1906. The height of the hill was increased by 413 metres in honor of 300th anniversary of the signing of Lublin agreement.
Apart from wall’s fragment, observation deck and lion, which was relocated here from the Town Hall more than 100 years ago, there is TV-tower in the park. TV-tower’s height is 192 metres and it is illuminated with different colors at night.
You can get to Vysokyi zamok from the side of Uzhhorodska Street, Zamkova Street or Knyazha Street.
