Memorial museum is located in the military settlers house. Ilya Repin lived there with his family from 1876-1877. Main focus of the museum is given to Chuhuiv period in the life and career of I.Y. Repin which demonstrates strong ties between painter and Ukraine.
First attempts to set up museum of Ilya Repin were made in 1914 by Chuhuiv and Kharkiv community. Government found perfect house for museum and provided money for its purchase but with the beginning of First World War it took a back seat.
Second attempt to build a museum was done in 1936. Extensive research about painter, his childhood and younger years was made. But again due to the war, everything was put on hold. In 1941 all research and work was stopped and whole collection was lost.
Ilya Repin memorial museum finally was created in august 1969 according to the minister’s order №2240 from 14th of May 1968. First visitors step their foot in the museum on August 3rd 1969 the day before 125th painters birthday anniversary.
