History: From Wild Boars to Wildebeest

The zoo’s story begins in 1982, when the regional branch of the Nature Conservation Society secured an 11-hectare plot on the city’s eastern outskirts and set about turning it into something remarkable.

The earliest residents were thoroughly local: wild boar, wolves, foxes, and a moose — brought in from the region’s forestry operations and the collection of the local history museum. A brown bear arrived from a travelling circus, delighted visitors for years, and lived out a long life on the grounds.

In 1992 the zoo became an independent legal entity, and in 1998 a presidential decree elevated it to a site of national significance, bringing its land under the protection of Ukraine’s Nature Reserve Fund. Over a few short decades, a modest menagerie of boars and foxes grew into a world-class collection.
