The town’s history, seen through the park

To understand the park, you need to understand Kremenets. The town spreads through a valley between hills, and every corner of it is shaped by the terrain. The castle on Bona Hill is mentioned as far back as the days of Kyivan Rus’; in the 13th century it withstood a siege that even the Mongol horde couldn’t break. 1. The queen who didn’t want to leave

Legend has it that Queen Bona loved this castle so much that when she returned to Italy, she took a box of Kremenets soil with her. Another tale claims she hid treasure somewhere deep inside the hill that has never been found — treasure hunters with metal detectors still come looking to this day.

2. The girl who defended the castle

According to another legend, during one of the sieges the castle was defended by a girl who poured the last cauldron of boiling water onto the attackers, saving the town at the cost of her own life. Her name hasn’t survived, but old-timers still point to a spot on the hillside where it supposedly happened.

The paths and views. The park itself is small but cozy: old trees, benches, and open spots that make for great photos of Bona Hill against the sky.

The climb up Castle Hill. The main draw. A trail leads from the center up to the castle ruins, and a panorama of the entire valley town awaits at the top. The climb isn’t extreme, but you’ll want proper shoes.

The architecture of the center. A few minutes from the park are the former Jesuit collegium ensemble, the Epiphany Monastery, and the wooden Holy Cross Church. Kremenets is compact, so everything is within walking distance.

How to get there

By car. From Ternopil, it’s about 70 km (43 mi) via Zbarazh, roughly a 1-hour drive. Coming from Rivne or Dubno, it’s a convenient approach from the north. The park is in the center; look for parking near the main streets.

By public transport. Buses and marshrutkas (shared minibuses) run to Kremenets from Ternopil, Rivne, and Pochaiv. There’s no railway connection in the town itself — the nearest major station is in Ternopil. From the bus station to the park is a few minutes’ walk.
