«Wolf's lair» right beside the highway? Yeah, it`s all possible in Odessa region. Moreover, not of the usual one, but of the well-known Freudian «wolf-man».

In fact, this is just a name of the estate in the village of Vasylivka, Odessa region, where the famous patient lived. It was built in the middle of the 19th century for Major General Dubetsky, who owned the entire village at that time. Possibly, the house was designed by the author of the Potemkin Stairs, however, this is only one of the versions. Looking at the ruins left of the estate, it is hard to believe that some time it was compared to the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Until the 20s of the 20th century, there were fruit trees surrounding Dubetsky`s place, a fountain and a pond with fish were nearby. According to legends, one of the many underground passages laid under the house led to it.

After Dubetsky had died, the estate was bought by merchant Konstantin Pankeev, whose very son glorified this place. Sergey Pankeev became the hero of Sigmund Freud's book “From the History of the Infantile Neurosis”, which is considered a classics of psychoanalysis. As a child, the boy began to suffer from nightmares about wolves sitting on a tree. It seemed to the child that they spoke to him with their eyes. Sergey felt panic fear of these animals. He consulted many psychotherapists, one of which was Sigmund Freud. By the way, thanks to the latter, Sergey became known as the “wolf-man”. He stayed at the estate in Vasylivka until the Revolution in 1917 .

During Soviet times there was a village council in the building, and later it was used by the grain and milk collective farm. By the end of the twentieth century, the estate had been definitively abandoned, disassembled on materials, and what had left is collapsing at a tremendous speed.

How to get !?
You can get to Vasylivka, where the “wolf-man” estate is located, from Odessa from «Privoz» bus station by buses in the directions of Lymanske, Rozdilna, Mikhaylivka, Novokrasne (departing almost every hour). An hour trip - and you are there. Here go along the highway E58 passing by “Valeria” gas station and turning right after the tire. Then one more time to the right, after that walk 10 minutes along the path without turning and here it is – «the wolf-man`s lair».
