Almost 250 years old, 16 exhibition halls, around 700 square meters of antique interiors — and behind it all there’s still an ordinary counter where you can buy medicine on prescription. This isn’t a faux-vintage reconstruction — it’s a genuinely working pharmacy.

«Under the Black Eagle» is simultaneously a museum of pharmacy history and a fully functioning state pharmacy. The ground-floor facade is decorated with relief portraits of Asclepius, the god of medicine, and his daughter Hygieia, the goddess of health, while a wrought-iron sign with a medical emblem and the date 1735 hangs above the entrance.

People come here for a feeling no new building can give: antique oak cabinets, faience and glass apothecary jars, scales, mortars, handwritten prescription books, and cellars lined with wine barrels once used for tinctures. None of it sits behind «do not touch» glass — it’s all in real working halls.

History

The pharmacy was founded by a military pharmacist named Natorp. Interestingly, the famous date 1735 on the sign is a historical quirk: the founder actually arrived in Lviv around 1772, and the building was erected around 1775. According to a popular theory, on the worn sign the left half of an «8» was misread as a «3» — so 1785 became 1735. That’s how Lviv ended up with «a pharmacy older than itself.»

For more than two centuries the place operated as an ordinary city pharmacy, surviving changing empires, wars, and signs. In 1966, a museum of pharmacy history was created within the historic interior. After restoration, the exhibition grew to 16 halls covering roughly 700 m² — and the pharmacy never closed for a single day.

The date above the entrance reads 1735. The real founding date is closer to 1772–1775. The error faded into history and became part of the legend.

Legends and lore

A pharmacy with this much history couldn’t do without its own legends — and a couple of them you can actually taste.

1. Iron wine

The pharmacy’s signature feature is «iron wine» (vinum ferri), an old iron-fortified tonic. According to legend, the recipe has been kept for generations, and visitors get to try a spoonful. It was once used to build up the blood and «lift the spirits» — today it’s more of a ritual and a souvenir.

2. The black eagle over the entrance

The name «Under the Black Eagle» comes from an old Lviv custom of naming buildings not by number but by the image on their facade. The black eagle became the pharmacy’s symbol — and, as the story goes, its «guardian,» protecting it from misfortune for centuries.

What to see and do

The trading hall. Start here: carved wooden cabinets, antique scales, faience jars with Latin labels. The most photogenic corner of the pharmacy.

The museum halls. A collection of apothecary vessels, instruments, prescription books, and equipment from different eras. You can clearly see how pharmacy evolved from alchemy into a science.

The cellars. Old vaulted rooms with wine barrels once used to prepare and store tinctures. The most atmospheric part — this is where the building’s age is felt most strongly.

Tasting the «iron wine.» A small ritual that almost no one skips.

How to get there

On foot. The pharmacy is a few minutes from Market Square, at the corner of Drukarska and Stavropihiiska streets. If you’re already in the historic core, look for the wrought-iron black eagle above the entrance.

By public transport. Take any tram or minibus to the center, then walk to Market Square — it’s just a few steps away.

By car. Better not to drive into the heart of old Lviv: the streets are narrow and parking is scarce. Leave the car on the edge of the center and walk in.
