Pink Lake (Genichesk Lake) is a place with incredible red-pink Martian landscapes, located near the beginning of the Arabatska Arrow in the village of Pryozerne. Also near the lake are the remains of a destroyed salt factory.
This firth origin salt lake, which is filled with water from Syvash, is the largest lake in the Genichesk district. Its surface area is 9.2 km². Summer salinity reaches 22-26%. Previously, salt was extracted on the lake, so it is divided by wooden columns into sectors - checks, between them saturated salt solution (brine), from which the salt settles to the bottom. The drier the summer, the more saturated the color of the lake, and after heavy rains, the lake's brightness diminishes. The white and pink whimsical crystals of salt crystals grow on wooden columns, and it doesn't make sense to break them off for souvenirs, they are very fragile.
The lake has a fantastic color due to the microalgae Dunaliella salina, which is able to live in very salty water. It produces carotenoids that not only give the water red-pink hues, but also have beneficial properties. In addition, the water contains a large number of microelements. Therefore, salt and brine from the lake are considered curative. There may be mud between the checks (also beneficial), but walking is possible (barefoot better). Checks under pink water, thick, like a syrup (but of a completely different taste), have a thick layer of salt, you can also walk there, the depth does not even reach the knees, but be very careful, there is silt under the salt, and salt crust can scratch the skin.
Tip - take a large supply of fresh water to wash off salt and silt from your skin. The "pinkness" of the lake is highly dependent on the temperature of the air, the light and the angle of view, so sometimes it can look like an ordinary lake, and sometimes the brightness of Syvash can surprise you a lot.
How to get there?
By train or bus to Genichesk, then by bus to Gengorky (turn on the village of Pryozerne), from the turn 5 km on foot.
