More than 86 square kilometres of water, sandy beaches, holiday camps — Kharkiv residents have long nicknamed this place the «Saltiv Sea». And what holds it all back is the dam where the reservoir’s story begins.
This is the dam and Pechenihy Reservoir at Staryi Saltiv in Kharkiv Oblast — for decades the go-to weekend escape for the city of Kharkiv. It is a beautiful place, cherished by many, but talking about it honestly today is impossible without mentioning the war.

What it is and why people came here
Pechenihy Reservoir is a large run-of-river reservoir on the Siverskyi Donets. The dam was built near the town of Pechenihy, while Staryi Saltiv on the right bank became the main recreational zone for Kharkiv’s population, all thanks to its «sea».
There were dozens of sandy beaches, holiday camps, children’s summer bases. Anglers called it paradise: perch, zander, pike. On warm weekends Staryi Saltiv drew thousands of city dwellers escaping to the water.
History: how the «sea» came to be
The reservoir was built between 1958 and 1962 and took several more years to fill — it reached its final form around 1964. The surface area exceeds 86 km2 and the volume is over 500 million cubic metres.
A steppe river was thus transformed into a genuine inland sea, and Staryi Saltiv grew from a quiet village into a regional-scale resort.
2022 and its aftermath
In the first days of the full-scale invasion, Russian forces occupied Staryi Saltiv. The settlement was liberated on 2 May 2022 after fighting. The toll was severe: around 59% of buildings — 824 out of 1,404 — were damaged or destroyed; the school, kindergarten and infrastructure were all hit. Civilians were killed.
Today the community is rebuilding — literally alongside the ongoing war. Any account of Staryi Saltiv is therefore simultaneously a story of a beautiful place and of its resilience.
