Chyhyryn in Cossack times was the hetman capital, as it was the settlement of famous Cossacks and the place of remarkable battles. According to the words of Olevskyi, poet of that times, in the 17th century there was the fortress that was the best one among many other buildings. It was located on the Castle hill. Unfortunately, nowadays we can see there only forest and lake on that place. But these forest and lake are the part of national historical and cultural reserve, which consists monumen of Bohdan Khmelnitsky and sightseeings.
Since the end of 19th century and up to World War I there were quarries on the hill. Their existence was the cause of hill’s decrease. Then workers realized the long-term consequences of having quarries on the hill and created the artificial lake there instead. They placed pellicle on its bottom, put the soil on it and pour water from local reservoirs. As for now, the pellicle goes to the natural ground because of the seaweed that started to appear. This process causes the lowering of water level and local authorities are rather concerned about future of this lake. They already changed water supply system, however it did not help.
How to get there?
The Castle hill is located on the western part of the city, but it is easy to find it because of straight streets. If you want to climb it, it is better to approach the hill from Zamkova street side.
