According to the researchers, Odessa catacombs emerged as early as the 18th century as a result of stone mining for the construction of the city of Odessa itself. Because of the mining of the stone, landslides were created, which over the years became more and more - and so underground bunk paths arose, and sometimes (for example, near the village of Usatovo) - and three-tiered. This unusual feature of the city has led to the emergence of myths about the impossibility of laying the metro due to the existence of the catacombs, or about the danger that nine-storey and higher buildings built over the catacombs are exposed to. Experts say that these myths remain something more than ordinary fabrications, the purpose of which is to raise interest in such a “reminder” of Odessa.

This phenomenon is truly unique: according to experts, the catacombs of Odessa are the longest on the planet: the total length of underground corridors exceeds 2,500 kilometers. Also in the underground world of Odessa are karst caves, one of these caves is Gritsaevskaya, located under the current central bus station. The peculiarity of such caves is hydrobionts, which were found in the flooded areas of the caves. Such a discovery - really sensational in the history of the catacombs, one of the species of crustaceans, was found in the Odessa catacombs - amphipods are rare creatures.

Today, there are many maps of the Odessa Catacombs, which the Black Sea expedition has been doing since 1965, but the present and future researchers still have a lot of work in the southern Ukrainian dungeons.

How to get there!?
If you also want to join in the debunking of the secrets of the Odessa catacombs, we advise you to start with excursions under the guidance of experienced guides - it will definitely be no less interesting, but independent travel is much safer.
