National historical and memorial reserve «Babi Yar» was created to convey to the society the history of tragically known mass elimination of people of Kyiv and prisoners of war by the Nazi party, that happened here.

The Tragedy of Holocaust
Babi Yar is a world-famous place of the tragedy that became a symbol of Holocaust. In the years of World War Two it was the first place, where Romani and Jews were massively slaughtered — women, elderly, children, literally everyone. In this place were spent final moments of an innocent civilian, a prisoner of war, a partisan, a hostage, a member of OUN, a mentally ill person…

For the international society — this is one of the most famous symbols of the Holocaust, where within two days, 29-30th of September 1941, over 30 thousand Jews were shot to death by the Nazis. For the first time this territory was recognized as a national reserve in the year of 2010, and it was founded in the 2007 year. In reality, besides the reserve this event is .reminded by science organizations and philanthropists.

Nowadays
In Kyiv there are a lot of beautiful places that bear witness to tragic events, such as Yar. Now it is a wondrous park not so far from the local TV tower. On the park’s territory there are a few memorials, committed to the victims of the Nazi regime. Before these horrific events this land was belonging to the monastery, and, because of that, it still has a Christian cemetery, and, close to it, a Jewish one. In this reserve, memorial events are often held, with the participation of foreign delegations, most often such of Israel. Behind the «Menorah» monument deep ravines begin to appear, this part of the park isn’t fully conquered yet by the hands of man. In the civilized part are often seen mothers with their little children, but it is not a place for picnics or parties, because the energy of this place is heavy enough, and it is more appropriate to just take a walk, thinking about the events past. Near the park, another famous monument is located — St. Cyril’s Church, which can be reached on feet.

Yet, now this place looks like a usual park, where a few memorial signs can be seen. Every day, children and adults walk around, walking their pets. At the same time, the park is filled with the sounds of happy children’s laughter, conversations, and sounds of birds and nature. Observing the visitors and the reserve’s life, it’s manager Boris Glazunov says that for the most part, people think of this place as of a simple city park.

Reconstruction of a memorial Babi Yar
The President of Ukraine proposed to create A Memorial of Holocaust Victims until the great anniversary of the Babi Yar executions. Before that, such initiatives were proposed by representatives of Jewish and Ukrainian intellectual communities, empathizing that creating such memorial place is an interest of a state scale.

After the reconstruction, the park’s lighting systems were refitted, the park itself was made greener and, also, alleys, pavements and, benches were reconstructed. The project of the Memorial centre of Holocaust would be created by the team of architectural bureau Querkraft Architekten together with a famous landscape architect Kieran Fraser Landscape Design. Sadly, specific date of the park’s opening is yet unknown, because it depends on the general complexity of the project.

Memorial day
By the way, every ear, 29th of September in Ukraine is a Memorial day of the Babi Yar Tragedy. Historically, in this day to the monuments in the Babi Yar comes a lot of people from all around the world, and pays respect to this place, especially Jewish and Romanian communities. Politicians and civilian activists bring wreaths in the sign of memory, respect and sorrow to more than a hundred thousand people, destroyed by the Nazis in this place.

Despite the fact that, this day happens only once a year, people come here from all around the world within the whole year.
