If you like underground galleries, catacombs and caves this is the right place for you to visit. Kochubeivs’ka mine (or Kochubeivs’ka galleries) took its name after famous Ukrainian family of nobleman who owned this place. Quarry was founded in 1904 and was functioning until 1915, after it was neglected and almost forgotten. Since this place is pretty far from civilization, and also because it wasn’t equipped well, it attracted only few adventures travelers. It would continue to remain known only to the few random tourists if not shooting of the movie “Red” based on the novel of Andrii Kokotiukha.

Shooting took place from March until April 2016. Wooden stairs and other decorations were built specifically for this movie and they preserved almost untouched until now. When we visited it in March 2017, lower part of the stairs was damaged because of collapse (which probably was done during movie shooting), which made it a bit difficult to go down (to go back we took another stairs from different side).

Regarding technical characteristics, quarry is 185m in length and 35m in depth and comprises of 5 galleries with total length of 250m. Wooden wheelbarrow was left in one of the galleries after the movie shooting. The fact that catacombs located in the field and you need to take mud road to get there brings it special charm. There is no indication that suddenly from nowhere you will see hills and cliffs. And when you approach closer you will see entrance to the valley.

To see all the beauty bring big torch with you and if you want to check out caves bring clothes that you don’t mind to get dirty.

The best way to reach this interesting place which is technically located in Kirovograd region is from Kryvyi Rih. Take any marshrutka which goes into direction of Zhovti Vodu (it departs from Terny bus stop) and head to Annovka village. As soon as you enter the village (take off before “Centre” bus stop and don’t pass the river), leave marshrutka and turn right before the monument of Ataman Kostya Stepovuy-Blakutnuy ( coordinates of the monument is: 48.2339513, 33.4610778) keep walking straight and after 30-50 minutes you will reach the destination.
