Few associate Kyiv with the fortress city. Even fewer people are aware that the capital boasts a well-preserved one of the most massive stone and earth fortresses and the largest fort on Earth. However, perhaps, it is not that strange, because our fortress can also be called «the most peaceful» one. She was not involved in any battles and no bullet was released from its weapons.

The construction of the New Pechersk fortress lasted in 30th -50th years of the XIX century, but at the end of the century it was already turned into a fortress-warehouse. Now some objects of the complex are of tourist interest, and some scattered around the city, hidden in parks or behind the fences. Visiting them can turn into a kind of quest. The Lower retaining wall of the fortress is one of the latter.

In the middle of the XIX century, with the erection of the fortress, 2 retaining walls were constructed on the Dnipro river slopes– the Lower and the Upper one. Their primary function was protection against landslides and the second, of course, was defense. The Lower wall along with the Podilsky Gate protected the road to the Chain Bridge. Exteriorly, it is a two-story brick gallery in the form of a 60-meter hemisphere, and inside it is a spacious passage to move troops with artillery and armed positions.

The walls were connected with the water supply, the military commandant's office and the Arsenal plant per underground tunnels. This is one of the beloved objects of local diggers, known as the «Rattler Race» and involving many mystical stories.

In the middle of the ХХ century, the Green Theater was built at the foot of the Upper Wall, and the Lower one has been abandoned and is now used for training by mountaineers under the name «Zelenka» (Greeny).

How to get there?!

To get to it, you need to go down to the Green Theater from the Park Road near Mariinsky Park. Round it from the right, and go down towards Naberezhne highway.
