Memorial museum of G.S. Skovoroda, one of the most famous museums in Kharkiv region, is located in the village of Skovorodynivka. In the second half of the XVIII century, the establishment of the park and the construction of the manor housewere begun, where G. S. Skovoroda, prominent Ukrainian educator, philosopher, and poet of his time, settled there just before his death. The museum in his honor was opened in 1922. Here, in the G. S. Skovoroda National Literary-Memorial Museum, many antiquities are exhibited: books, paintings, and also Ukrainian household items that vividly convey the spirit of that time. But the main place is taken by the exposition devoted to Skovoroda’s life, his poetic and pedagogical heritage.
Bright one-story house built in classic style stands on a small hill. One of its rooms is memorial. Everything in the room recreates the atmosphere which surrounded G. S. Skovoroda during the last years of his life: antique bureau with his manuscripts, books and quill pens, bed covered with a homespun sackcloth, and a simple peasant coat hanging on the wall.
Three halls of the Museum acquaint visitors with life artistic path of the outstanding philosopher and poet. Among the exhibits you can see diorama of village of Chernuhy, Poltava region, where Skovoroda was born, photographs, and pictures of places connected with his life, portraits of his friend and contemporaries. Books, clothing, and items of everyday life of XVIII century allow you to feel peculiarities of the era. One of the most unique showpieces are the watch with Skovoroda’s inscription, and his violin.
House-museum is surrounded by the old park with alleys leading to the quite pond. On its banks stands the old, 700 years-old oak. Unfortunately, it was harmed in the years of the Second World War and shriveled up. Today it is surrounded enclosed with metal lattice with the sign “The giant oak under which G.S. Skovoroda loved to work”. Near the tree there is a granite block on which the sculptural image of G. Skovoroda (sculptors - D. Owl and L. Zhukovskaya) is carved.
Here, near the village of Babai, you can find another place said to be connected with Skovoroda – the water source "skovorodinivska krynica" (cold wellspring of skovoroda). According to the legend, the wandering philosopher himself have dug up the source.
In 1960 the memorial plaque was installed near this source in Babai, which indicates that the wellspring is a historical and cultural landmark.
Also Skovorodynivka nature reserve is beautiful in any time of the year, but it is especially attractive in May when this quiet corner is alive with traditional fair. Thus this will be an excellent time to visit this place!
