Khotyn Fortress

Khotyn is a city with more than a thousand years of history, it is located on the right bank of the Dniester River on the border of Chernivtsi and Khmelnitsky regions. The main reason to visit Khotin is the fortress. The Khotyn fortress architectural prereserve is one of the 7 Wonders of Ukraine. It appeared on the banks of Dniester in the tenth century. At that time, it was just a defensive fort (an earthen shaft with wooden walls). The first stone fortress built in the 13th century was small and it was often rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. Нere the famous Khotyn battle took place in 1621, when a Turkish army, which was almost three times bigger, was destroyed by Ukrainian and Polish forces. Cossack army led by Peter Sahaidachny played a decisive role in the battle. That is why the monument to the hetman stands on the territory of the reserve.

 

Spring and summer is the best time to visit Khotin. It is not very crowded in the early spring. You can safely explore the entire territory of the fortress, visit the Museum of Torture Tools, take the trail to the rocky shore and take pictures of anything you want without worrying that someone will ruin the picture. But as soon as the sun begins to warm — the city fills with tourists, lovers of history and good music. After all, summer is the festival time, and there are a lot of them in Khotyn!

 

The most important thing to bring with you from Khotin is your impressions and memories. Over 50 films were shot on the territory of the Khotyn fortress, including “D'Artagnan and Three Musketeers “, “The Arrows of Robin Hood“, “The Rising Hawk“, “Taras Bulba” starring Bogdan Stupka (the execution scene was filmed in the Khotyn Fortress). So be sure to make as many beautiful photos as possible!

 

The nearest railway station is Kamianets-Podilskyi, which is located on the distance of 25 km. So you should use transport, hitchhiking or bus to get there. There are regular buses to Khotyn from Kamianets-Podilskyi and Chernivtsi.

— the address of the bus station in Kamianets-Podilskyi: Knyaziv Koriatovychiv street, 19; phone: (03849) 31-2-51 (if you are to go from Kamianets, you need to ask the driver to stop near the fortress. Then you will have to walk two or three kilometers from the place where you got off the bus);
— the address of the bus station in Chernivtsi: Holovna street, 219; telephone: (03722) 4-16-35, 4-16-30 (you can go by trolleybuses #3 and # 6, the first one passes the railway station by).
