Where else could you take a walk in the English Park surrounded by Cupid and Plato, cross Kamyanka on the Venetian bridge, walk along the Champs Elysees, look in the "Mirror of Diana", go down to the Amsterdam Gateway and get to the island of love? Such a center of ancient culture and a European oasis within Ukraine, moreover - within a park in Uman.
Sofiyivka National Dendrological Park is a monument of world garden and park art of the end of the 18th century and a favorite place of rest for Ukrainians. The park extends along the river Kamyanka. The founder of this paradise was earl Stanislav Potocki. His wife, Sophia, was Greek, and the park he created in 1796 seemed to be a testament to his love for his unsurpassed wife. Therefore, the basis for the creation of park architecture were Homer's poems "Iliad" and "Odyssey". The central part of the park displays scenes from the mythology of ancient Greece and Rome. In parallel with the construction of garden and park buildings, a large amount of work was done on planting trees and shrubs: exotic trees were ordered from all over the world. Today there are about 2000 species of trees and shrubs.
On the left you can see the oak Dubynka. Here is such an oxymoron - next to the statue of Orpheus and the Ionian Sea - an oak with such a prosaic name in Ukrainian. The oak is famous for its three-hundred-year-old oak. Also here is a built wooden Chinese gazebo, painted in different colors.
In the park "Sofiyivka" there are four large ponds: Lower, Upper, Red and Viitivsky and several smaller ones, thanks to them the whole territory of the park is supplied with water. The ponds are decorated with small architectural compositions, the most famous of which is the fountain "Snake", which is located in the Lower Pond. The height of the water column in this fountain reaches 16 meters. In the park you can see many sculptures of Greek gods, including Hermes, Venus, Apollo, Orpheus, there was a statue of the favorite hero of all lovers - Cupid, as well as the ancient Greek poet Euripides. The grotto "Mirror of Diana" was laid out of granite blocks in 1800. The name of the grotto is explained by the fact that before it stood a marble statue of Diana, and its reflection was reflected in the water. If you go up to the bridge nearby, you can see the main decoration of the park "Sofiyivka" - a large fifteen-meter waterfall.
Areas of the park have classic names taken from Roman and Greek mythology: "Meeting Square", "Terrace of the Muses" and others. There are also grottoes "Nut", "Loketek", whose names already have a slightly different origin. Then the road leads to the Champs Elysees. This place is also called "earthly paradise" because it is full of harmony, peace and comfort. At the entrance to the Champs Elysees is a kind of composition, which, according to researchers, arose by accident. It consists of a granite block of natural shape and a quadrangular granite column. The composition is called "Nature and Art".
In "Sofiyivka", which itself is a monument of eternal love, there is an island dedicated to this most magical feeling that a person can comprehend. The pavilion, located on the island of love, is built in the style of the Renaissance. Visitors to the park have the opportunity not only to enjoy the beauty of architecture and see rare species of trees, they also have the opportunity to take a boat trip on the river Acheron. To do this, go down to the Amsterdam Gateway. The length of the underground river generally reaches more than 400 meters and a width of 3 meters.
The fountain "Seven Streams" can be reached by a serpentine path. The name of the fountain comes from the seven streams of water that rise elastically. Not far from the fountain is a statue depicting the face of an older man expressing pain and suffering. This statue is called "Winter" and embodies not only the season but also the end of human life - old age. This sculpture is also called "Sculpture of the old man".
In the northern part of the park is the so-called English Park, with an area of 2 hectares, and next to it is the Parterre Amphitheater, the upper part of which consists of the regular shape of clipped lawns and roses. The middle part of the amphitheater resembles a horseshoe in shape and is formed by a granite wall.
Sofiyivka Park is a garden and park and architectural masterpiece, which was designed to serve as a monument to eternal love, and continues to enchant and amaze visitors today. The park is annually visited by tens and hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over Ukraine and abroad. Visitors can enjoy excursions, literature and souvenirs, as well as all amenities, such as a hotel or restaurant for the discerning and for those who simply can not leave this paradise.
