For about thirty years in the Kharkiv region, steam locomotives have ceased to be used as the main rolling stock and traction unit, but, fortunately, some of them have survived for posterity as technical monuments and historical relics. With their unique silhouette, so different from modern locomotives, they invariably attract attention, awakening the memory of the past. Therefore, the installation of such monuments plays an important role in the patriotic education of youth. Currently, 5 monuments-locomotives have been established in Kharkiv and the nearest suburbs. Initially, there were 6 of them, but the locomotive installed in park "Yunist" was finally removed and scrapped a few years ago due to its emergency condition.

Monument-locomotives are a kind of technical monuments, full-scale samples of real locomotives, which present historical as well as technical value.

So, for today the following locomotives-monuments have remained:
1. At the Kharkiv-Pasazhyrskyi station there is a FD20 locomotive.
2. In the depot of the Osnova station there are steam locomotives СО17, 9P and a steam generator Er.
3. At the depot of the Zhovten station there is a steam locomotive Eu.

A few words about the history of FD locomotives ("Felix Dzerzhinsky")
This series is a business card of the Soviet steam locomotive industry of the 1930s, the first powerful freight locomotives of its time. They were created to deliver materials to the places of building of the century. Only the best of the best were hired for these locomotives. In total, about 3,200 locomotives of this series were produced.

They embodied three main design ideas: the maximum use of the existing railway network (without any reconstruction), the use of a screw coupling, increasing the speed and weight of freight trains. The design team, having worked hard, "issued" a drawing of an innovative locomotive in an unprecedented period in the practice of locomotive building - in 100 working days after receiving the order. Three machine-building plants took part in the assembly of the first locomotive of this series: Izhorsky, Kolomensky and Sormovsky.

FD20 series steam locomotives were the most widespread and reliable commercial locomotives until they were replaced by more profitable electric locomotives in economics. Not far from the Kharkiv-Pasazhyrsky station, closer to Novoselivka, such a locomotive-monument to the military and labor feat of the Southern Railway railroad workers was erected in peacetime and during the Great Patriotic War. The pedestal of the monument is decorated with the inscription: "GLORY TO THE WORKERS OF STEEL HIGHWAYS".

Unfortunately, they, due to the fact that they are in the open area, are prone to the destructive effects of time, so do not delay a tour of these unique evidence of the achievements of Soviet engineering thought!
