The only thing that reminds of the past glory of the S.I. Gritsevets Higher Military Aviation School for pilots in Rogan is a lonely monument to an airplane that is located on the main entrance to the territory of the Voyenved military area. The Kharkiv Higher Military Aviation School for pilots named after the two times awarded Hero of the Soviet Union S. I. Gritsevets (Order of the Red Star) was one of the best aviation schools of the USSR, where the future Heroes of the Soviet Union would acquire their education (there were 293 students who later became Heroes of USSR, including 12 who were awarded this title twice, as well as Ivan Kozhedub - three times), future cosmonauts (15 astronaut pilots, including three Heroes of USSR - Alexei Leonov, a cosmonaut who was the first to travel into open space).

In the depths of the Rogan residential area there previously was an aviation school, which trained, in particular, fighter pilots for the whole of Ukraine. Now the strategic military object has been abandoned. We can envision its former purpose only thanks to the monument of the MIG-21 (a supersonic jet fighter and interceptor aircraft), which can be found at the main entrance to the school's territory. Several educational buildings, aircraft hangars, residential, administrative and household buildings are looted by vandals and those who seek free metal.
The quite large territory of the military unit houses multiple multi-storey buildings with a lot of premises, which are easy to get yourself lost in. So, if you decide to visit, don’t expect to cover the area in a 2-3 hours walk. Exploring only one house takes at least one and a half hours. If you need to buy something, like a bottle of water, it’s better to do it in advance, since there are no stores near the military unit.

Inside the houses there are many gloomy and scary places, such as large basements, so bringing a flashlight is quite useful. When you’re inside the new training department, from time to time you might feel uneasy. Because of the huge size of the building and its halls, any sound resonates loudly with a strong echo. Therefore, it often seems that there is someone inside of the building, apart from you. A lot of narrow dark passages and corridors, which sometimes lead to dead-end rooms, create the impression of staying in a labyrinth and might cause mild panic attacks.

But still you won’t feel completely detached from civilization and humanity. In close proximity to the Aviation School there are apartment buildings that were once military dormitories. There live the locals, who are indifferent to the visitors of the Voyenved territory. Also, there are security guards on the territory, but it is difficult to run into them. The main obstacle is to get past the dogs that often wander around the school buildings. The animals might act like a security signal, as they will start barking upon noticing you, attracting the attention of the guards. However, if you are caught wandering around, the guards won’t call the police, or use force of any kind, but will rather politely ask to leave the territory of the military school. The guard’s spot is located on the first floor of the barracks of the 2nd and 3rd lines or in the building of the old Training and Flight Department. Oddly enough, you won’t encounter homeless people or drug addicts on the site.

You can get to the Aviation School by taking the bus number 45, from the metro station Proletarska. Get out at the final stop "Louis Pasteur Street".
