Museum of folk architecture and life of the middle Nadnipryashina in Pereyaslav Khmelnutskiy is one of the 3 biggest open air museums in Ukraine. The other 2 open air museums are Shevchenkivs’kiy Hay in Lviv and Pyrogiv near Kyiv.

According to Wikipedia there are 185 objects on the territory, among which 104 sites of folk architecture of XVII—XIX centuries, including 20 houses with yards and other agricultural buildings, 23 various workshops, more than 20 000 pieces of folk art, working instruments, household items which were found in the forest steppes of Ukraine.

Pereyaslav Khmelnutskiy museum construction started in 1964. The unique thing of the museum is that households of people of different trades were reconstructed. You can see houses of potter, bee keeper, miller as well as others. Most of them were closed for visit except 3 of them that were opened and furnished in 2014. For comparison in Shevchenkivs’kiy Hay all houses are open for visit including functioning churches. On top of households other buildings could be found such as church and local shinok (bar).

Buildings have been under construction for a long period of time starting from 11th cent. Interesting fact entrance to the house is lower than our average height (author’s note: My height is 161 sm and I had to bend down to enter the house) which leads us to the conclusion that people back than weren’t too tall. Households are located in historical sequence plus all important village buildings are located in the center. There are 2 entrances, on the city side or from the highway. We used city entrance and after left using highway exit to continue our way to Kaniv.
